For the first time since 2012, the 50 mile event heads out once more to Beerburrum before returning to Woodford, taking in the Bracalba Basin loops on the return leg ... just to keep everyone on their toes!

The Glasshouse 50 - Cook's Tour - takes place on or near May 17th every year.  This date being the anniversary of Cooks sighting and naming of the Glasshouse Mountains in 1770 - he  continued north and named the town of 1770 accordingly.

The Glass House Mountains were named by Lieutenant James Cook, when he was sailing north during his epic journey along Australia’s east coast. He navigated the area on May 17, 1770 in HM Bark Endeavour. 

In his journal of that day Cook wrote ‘these hills lie but a little way inland, and not from each other: they are remarkable for the singular form of their elevation, which very much resembles a glass house, and for this reason I called them Glass Houses’. 

The glass houses referred to by Cook were the glass making foundries in Yorkshire England which reminded him of a familiar landscape. 

 

About the Glasshouse Trails

Established 31 years ago this year, it's fair to say, though some will argue, that without these events Australia would not have the trail running scene it currently enjoys, certainly not in the realms of ultra marathon running.  Indeed, the Glasshouse 100 (mile) was the first 100 mile trail race in the country and continues to be the longest running event of its kind in the country.

For some of the finest runners that this country has produced, this is where they first tested their mettle and put foot to dirt.  Martin Fryer, Kelvin Marshall, David Waugh (who sort of owns the miler), Mike Le Roux (still the fastest trail miler in Australia by virtue of his 15:39 win over Waugh in 2011) and so many more.  

From Graham Medill through to Walter Brumniach and, during what might say it's best years, the 'Miler' drew the best - Deb Nicholl, Marita Eisler, Lisa Spink and Brendan Mason among many.  Though it wasn't just about the fastest - Bill Thompson remains the only runner (correct us if we're wrong) to have 12 finishes under his belt with Stuey Grills creeping up!

The bottom line?  'The House', the original 'Runner's Miler', is where it was, will be and should be where it's at.  We aim to make it so.

 
  • ​The course (50 mile) will head out to Woodford via the lesser used trails, crossing the fire trails as opposed to running on them.  Running a loop around Beerburrum and returning via the full length of the Powerlines and taking in the two loops at CP8 (Bracalba).
     

  • The 54 km will run to CP6 (Woodford - Beerburrum Rd) and, instead of heading to Beerburrum, will head directly to the Powerlines and follow the 50 mile course.
     

  • The 32 km run will follow route to CP8 via the Powerlines and return 
     

  • The 13 km will run a loop from the start to CP7 (the location of which will become apparent) before returning to the finish.

The Course/Event

Note:  All events start and finish at the Stanmore Rural Fire Service HQ unless updated otherwise

Start Times & Pricing

  • 10 km walk/run  -  $55  -  9:00 am

  • 30 km walk/run  -  $75  -  7:00 am

  • 50 km walk/run  -  $99  -  5:00 am

  • 50 mile run        -  $165 - 3:00 am

Those that are walking can choose to start at any time slot set for other events.  Sunrise at Woodford on May 17th is 6:17 am with first light some 15 minutes earlier. 

 

Depending on your chosen event, you will need a headlamp.

We will have more information soon with regard to checkpoint locations and drop bags where applicable.

 

Mandatory Kit

  • Please familiarise yourself with the course map and course directions, both of which can be found on this page. (maybe print off the map and carry a copy if you’re unsure of directions)

  • Water bottle

  • Headlamp (for runs commencing before sunrise)

  • Access to a map of the course - either by mobile device or printed map (available from this page)

  • Mobile phone (most areas or the course have coverage and having a phone means you can relocate to an area that has coverage if that’s not the case)

On the Day

 

Course Marking

Course marking will consist of flagging tape, arrows on trees, signage where necessary and red, flashing LED lights mounted on posts at key points.  NB – the LED lights are not directional. They are designed to ensure that you see and draw your attention to the arrow that accompanies them. Do not assume that the light indicates the way to go.


Hydration

It is essential, with no exceptions, that each participant carries a water bottle at the very minimum. There will be water at the start/finish area and at checkpoint 1, along with some snacks/lollies.

 

Litter

Any rubbish can be taken from you each time you visit a checkpoint. Anything that leaves the checkpoint with you must stay with you until you can dispose of it properly and not on the course. We’d like to set and maintain an example to those less conscientious.


Toilets

Toilet facilities are available at the start/finish area. Please do not remove paper from the toilets at the start/finish area.

During the Event


Withdrawal

If you pull out or have to leave the course for any reason, please advise the checkpoint staff or those at the start finish area.


Practice mindfulness

Regardless of ability, please be mindful of other runners: If you’re a faster runner wanting to pass, advise the runner in front by all means, but be patient and don’t pressurise anyone. It can be unnerving and easily lead to a trip. Conversely, if you are aware of a faster runner behind you, take the utmost of care and allow them to pass when it’s safe. Many a runner/walker’s day can be blighted by the smallest of incidents and we want everyone to leave on Saturday night being a little better for their experience. Look after each other out there.


Health and injury

This isn’t the nanny state by any means but we are out on the trail. As per the waiver agreed to on entry, should you become injured or should event staff consider that you need medical attention or examination, do not continue until authorised to do so. If it’s deemed that it’s not in your interests to continue, you will be withdrawn from the event. We’d rather make the mistake of scratching someone who could continue than letting someone who shouldn’t.


Remember where you are

We don’t like to talk about it, but we are in Queensland and many of the locals aren’t so friendly if they’re frightened or disturbed. Watch where you’re putting your feet and keep a close eye on the ground as well as ahead.

The event crew are running the show

Cooperate with event crew/officials/volunteers all the times - they're there not only because they enjoy giving something back or participating in a different way, but because they have event experience. They know what they're doing and they'll be under instruction from the race directors. Under whatever circumstances, the event directors decisions are final ... and they're usually the same as the crew! :)

Finally, have Fun!
It is a compulsory requirement of all participants at AAA Racing events to have fun. Failure to have any fun will be frowned upon by the event management team!
